The delicious nuts from the hickory tree are surrounded by a hard shell and woody husk. The tastiest hickory nuts are from the pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis) and kingnut hickory (Carya laciniosa).

In many ways, the pignut hickory tree is an underappreciated species. This is likely due to the fact that humans don’t typically consider its nuts edible, though a litany of forest-dwelling animals readily consume them (guess why they’re called PIGnut hickories).
Pignut Hickory produces nuts that can be bitter but are eaten by many different wildlife species; early settlers used the nuts for feeding hogs. It is also a host plant for Hickory Horndevil (Citheronia regalis) moth and the Banded hairstreak (Satyrium calanus) butterfly.

29 Σεπ 2013 · Most hickory nuts in the US are edible, the most popular one being the pecan, which has a limited range in the south. Here in central New England (and in much of the estern US), the most common hickories are the shagbark ( Carya ovata ) and pignut ( Carya glabra ).
