Gateway Arch National Park is a national park of the United States located in St. Louis, Missouri, near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In its initial form as a national memorial, it was established in 1935 to commemorate: the debate over slavery raised by the Dred Scott case.
The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot-tall (192 m) monument in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of a weighted catenary arch, [5] it is the world's tallest arch [4] and Missouri's tallest accessible structure. Some sources consider it the tallest human-made monument in the Western Hemisphere. [6] .
St. Louis and the Gateway Arch are both referred to as the "Gateway to the West." The arch is an inspirational, transcendent symbol of Thomas Jefferson’s vision of building a unified continental nation and St. Louis’ role as a confluence and gateway to the American West during the 19th century.
That is the recommended station for the Arch while the park undergoes a huge renovation. When you get off at 8th and Pine, there are signs that guide you to the Arch visitor center which is temporarily at the Old Courthouse, an easy walk.
