Arizona has a list of specific excuses that can be used to be exempt from reporting for jury duty, including excuses for military, elected official, student, breastfeeding, age, medical worker and firefighter. A judge or jury commissioner of the court for which the person was called to jury service excuses the prospective juror for good cause based on a showing of undue or extreme hardship under the circumstances, including being temporarily absent from the jurisdiction or a lack of transportation.
To be excused from jury duty for prior service, you must have served as an empaneled juror that rendered a verdict within the last two years. If you reported for service but were not chosen, we would not be able to excuse you.
All requests to be excused from jury service must be submitted in writing. Submitting a request to be excused does not mean it will be granted. It is the juror’s responsibility to confirm their reporting status by calling the automated phone system or logging on to the website as indicated on the summons.
In performing their sworn duty, jurors must conduct themselves in such a way that no one can question their integrity. Any judicial officer, whether judge, lawyer, or juror, who acts in such a way as to destroy public confidence in the judicial system becomes unfit to perform their duty.
