Air Force Pilot and Army Aviator Badges are issued in three ratings: Basic, Senior, and Command (Air Force)/Master (Army). The higher degrees are denoted by a star or star with wreath above the badge.
For those who wish to be officially authorized to wear the Army Aviation Badge, here is a summary of what veterans, the next-of-kin, or authorized representatives must do. To start the process, a complete copy of the service member’s records must be obtained.

Combat Infantryman badges (three awards) (see fig 29.33); Expert Infantryman badge (see fig 29.34). (2) Group 2. Combat Medical badges: (three awards) (see fig 29.35); Expert Field Medical badge (see fig 29.36).
Basic Aviation Badge – Permanent Award. (a) Individual must be on flying status as a crewmember in accordance with AR 600-106 or be granted a waiver by HQDA, be on flying status, have performed in-flight duties for not less than 48 flight hours (whichever comes first), or be school trained; (b) An officer on flying status as an aerial observer.
