The Autumn Magic Black Chokeberry is known for its outstanding bright purple to red to orange fall color, compact form, and large, attractive fruits. Place in a higher light location for the best flower and fruit display. Best used for naturalizing, mass plantings, and wetland reclamation projects.
An upright, deciduous shrub to around 2.5m tall with erect branches that may arch with age. The dark green, narrowly ovate leaves are hairy beneath and turn red in autumn. Clusters of small white flowers sometimes tinged with pink are borne in late spring and followed by red fruits.
Jellies are heavy, sweet, and solid due to the abundance of pectin. The Red Chokeberry can be eaten raw and is more palatable than the Black Chokeberry. Birds tend to leave them alone, so berries remain on bushes and provide ornamental value. The genus name, Aronia, is from the Greek word, 'aria.'
