An art teaching credential enables you to teach elementary, middle school and high school art in public schools. The credential has two major parts - the art subject content area and the education courses.

This degree offers a dynamic integration of theory and practice that prepares students to engage with art in the public sphere as well as preparing them to become art teachers in K-12 schools. Hundreds of teachers across Southern California are alumni of our program, contributing to their communities in a myriad of ways.

To become an art teacher in California, you will need at least a bachelor's degree, preferably with a major in art. You will also need to have graduated from an art teacher preparation program, either as part of an undergraduate degree program or as a post-baccalaureate program.
A partial professional preparation program is included in the Art Education curriculum, which is certified by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and is designed for teacher candidates to perform subject matter competency in Art.
Step 1. Pursue an Education and Degree. If you want to become an art teacher in California there are a few ways that you can complete your education. California requires all public school teachers to hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
The Bachelor of Arts degree offers concentrations in Art History, General Studio Art and Teaching. The program objectives are to provide correlative experiences, information and theory. In addition to the requirements listed below for the major, students must meet the other university requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree.
