Glossary of Art Terms Abstract – a style of art in which shapes, designs, textures and colors are represented in a way that may look unrealistic, but that emphasizes moods or feelings.
Design: Organization or structure of formal elements in a work of art; the art of combining the elements of a work of art into a satisfactory visual whole. Detail: The small elements that collectively constitute a work of art. Dimension: a measurable extant with depth, height, length, etc.
Glossary of Art Terms • atmospheric perspective The representation of space in a drawing or painting by making objects appear distant by blurring outlines, by showing less detail, and by making colors lighter and cooler. • background The part of the painting or other image that seems to be farthest from the viewer.
Glossary of Art terms Abstract: not the way something really looks. An abstract work of art is based on a real object. But the artist leaves out details or changes the object in the picture to look different than the real object. accent: to stress or emphasize something in an art form.
