If you have osteoarthritis of the knee, you will probably feel your knee is painful and stif at times. It may only afect one knee, especially if you’ve injured it in the past, or you could have it in both. The pain may feel worse at the end of the day, or when you move your knee, and it may improve when you rest.

What treatment options do I have? The treatment options for osteoarthritis will depend on several factors, including your age, level of symptoms, and level of activity. There are a number of both non-surgical and surgical options, depending on the type and location of the arthritis.
Knee pain. Knee pain is very common, but can usually be treated at home and normally starts to feel better in a few days. It might be a good idea to contact your GP or pharmacist, who can give you advice on your recovery, especially if you can’t put any weight on your knee. Make an appointment to see your doctor if:
• Pain – usually dull and achy but can be sharp with sudden movements. The pain may be worse at the end of the day or when you move your knee and it may improve with rest. You may have pain at night that wakes you. The pain tends to be variable and you will have good and bad days.
