In partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education of Nigeria, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the British Council in Nigeria, UNICEF has supported a study on Language in Education in Nigeria.
This study recommends that the Federal Government of Nigeria should do more in the enforcement of the multilingual provisions in all sectors of education and also develop more educational resources and orthographies of indigenous languages to meet the demands of multilingual education.
The paper elucidates some language education related issues like the challenges of teaching the following languages and recommendations for a way forward: indigenous language education, second or official language education, English and French, and foreign languages in tertiary education.
Nigerian language. At the secondary level, it is expected that every child should be bilingual in two Nigerian languages. Thirty six years later, the impact of the policy on the language education of Nigerian pupils was assessed. Data were collected using questionnaire and interview methods.
