ASA S. BUSHNELL, the fortieth governor of Ohio, was born in Rome, New York on September 16, 1834. His education was limited and attained in the commons schools of his native state. As a teenager, he moved to Springfield, Ohio, where he worked in a dry goods store.
The Asa Bushnell Papers include a small collection of 1897 proclamations from various state governors declaring the holidays of Thanksgiving, Labor and Arbor Day, Bushnell's governor extradition papers of fugitive felons and three appointments of positions by the office.
