The median survival following diagnosis of ascites was 5.7 months. Ovarian cancer favoured longer survival while low serum albumin, low serum protein and liver metastases adversely affected survival. The independent prognostic factors for survival were cancer type, liver metastases and serum albumin.
Two main reasons cause ascites in patients with cancer. First, cancer can spread to the lining of the organs—the peritoneum—and make it leaky, causing malignant ascites. Second, cancer can spread to the liver and cause increased pressure in the liver.
12 Σεπ 2023 · Ascites formation is a common complication of cancer with a significant symptomatic burden for patients. Malignant ascites (MA) is defined by the presence of tumor cells within the ascitic fluid. It does not only cause substantial morbidity, but is also associated with impaired survival.
Malignant ascites is one of the most common sequela of epithelial ovarian cancer. It causes significant symptoms and can have a detrimental impact on patient quality of life, especially in women with recurrent ovarian cancer.
In patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), ascites is often diagnosed late with average onset of 11 months from the time of diagnosis. Prognosis is poor after ascites development with an estimated median survival of 1.8 months from time of onset.
Malignant ascites (MA) is a sign of advanced cancer and poor prognosis. MA can result in impairment in quality of life (QOL) and significant symptoms.
