Malignant ascites indicates the presence of malignant cells in the peritoneal cavity and is a grave prognostic sign. While survival in this patient population is poor, averaging about 20 wk from time of diagnosis, quality of life can be improved through palliative procedures.
Females survived longer than the males (P = 0.0001) but this is due to better prognosis with ovarian and breast cancer groups. There was improved survival in those patients who had chemotherapy ( P = 0.0001).

Malignant ascites (MA) is defined by the presence of tumor cells within the ascitic fluid. It does not only cause substantial morbidity, but is also associated with impaired survival.
Malignant ascites affects a significant proportion of women with advanced and recurrent ovarian cancer. It frequently becomes the most pertinent issue in these patients and can have a detrimental effect on their QOL.
