Malignant ascites indicates the presence of malignant cells in the peritoneal cavity and is a grave prognostic sign. While survival in this patient population is poor, averaging about 20 wk from time of diagnosis, quality of life can be improved through palliative procedures.
Females survived longer than the males (P = 0.0001) but this is due to better prognosis with ovarian and breast cancer groups. There was improved survival in those patients who had chemotherapy ( P = 0.0001).

In patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), ascites is often diagnosed late with average onset of 11 months from the time of diagnosis. Prognosis is poor after ascites development with an estimated median survival of 1.8 months from time of onset.
Malignant ascites is one of the most common sequela of epithelial ovarian cancer. It causes significant symptoms and can have a detrimental impact on patient quality of life, especially in women with recurrent ovarian cancer.
