26 Φεβ 2024 · Infectious causes of aseptic meningitis include viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, with viruses being the predominant agents. Among viral causes, enteroviruses (such as coxsackie and enteric cytopathic human orphan [ECHO] viruses) account for over half of the cases, followed by HSV-2, West Nile virus, and varicella-zoster virus (VZV).
The most common cause of aseptic meningitis is a viral infection, specifically by enteroviruses. In fact, 90 percent of all meningitis cases that are viral are caused by enteroviruses. [2] Other viruses that may cause aseptic meningitis are varicella zoster virus, herpes, and mumps. [4]
The viruses we detected in aseptic meningitis cases are presented according to gender and age groups ().The most prevalent virus was enterovirus (25%; n = 60), followed by HHV-6 (7.9%; n = 19), and VZV (3.8%; n = 9). Enterovirus was common in the pediatric age group, especially in those younger than 4 years of age.
