Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is not a holy day of obligation, and yet it is one of the days during the liturgical year on which very large numbers of people participate in the ceremony of the distribution of ashes. Ashes were an ancient symbol of repentance; they remind us of our mortality. On this day we recognize our human frailty.

Since the Middles Ages at least, the Church has used ashes to mark the beginning of the penitential season of Lent, when we Remember our mortality and mourn for our sins. In our present liturgy for Ash Wednesday, we use ashes made from the burned palm branches distributed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year.
Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting.
