The Pacific plate began forming when the triple junction at the center of Panthalassa destabilized about 190 million years ago. The Pacific plate is almost entirely oceanic crust, but it contains some continental crust in New Zealand, Baja California, and coastal California. [3]
The Pacific plate, for instance, is essentially surrounded by zones of subduction (the so-called Ring of Fire) and moves much faster than the plates of the Atlantic basin, which are attached (perhaps one could say 'welded') to adjacent continents instead of subducting plates.
