Marriage between one man and one woman for a lifetime is the historic Christian standard based on the full witness of Scripture. The Assemblies of God holds marriage in such high regard that it only recognizes the right to divorce under a narrow set of biblically warranted exceptions.
The Nature of Divorce 1. God hates divorce. God’s attitude toward divorce is nowhere stated more clearly than in Malachi 2:14-16: …[T]he Lord is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. Has not the Lord made them one?
“Neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female”—these are basic relationship principles to which faithful followers of Christ must give highest priority. The God of the Bible “does not show favoritism” (Romans 2:11; cf. also 2 Samuel 14:14; 2 Chronicles 19:7; Acts 10:34; Ephesians 6:9).
31 Ιουλ 2023 · The Assemblies of God denomination values the institution of marriage and, as a result, takes divorce seriously. The purpose of its teaching about divorce is to obey Scripture and to effectively minister to the men, women, and children who are impacted when a marriage ends.
God has stated categorically (Malachi 2:15-16) that he hates divorce. His hatred of divorce stems from the fact that, divorce destroys the beauty of marriage and nullifies God’s declaration of oneness in the marital relationship (Gen. 2:24).
15 Ιουλ 2024 · While Jesus makes it plain that divorce and remarriage without biblical grounds is sinfully adulterous (Matt. 19:9; cf. 1 Cor. 7:10–11), he also acknowledges that those who are divorced are truly divorced (not still married in God’s eyes) and those who have remarried are truly married.
