23 Ιουν 2022 · When the city of Atlanta hired its first Black police officers in 1948, the milestone was covered by the city’s Black newspaper, the Atlanta Daily World, and by the city’s mainstream newspapers, the morning Atlanta Constitution and the afternoon Atlanta Journal, but in starkly different ways.

7 Απρ 2011 · Chartered in 1917, the NAACP Atlanta Branch started under the leadership of James Weldon Johnson, Harry Pace, Dr. Charles Johnson, Dr. Louis Wright, and Walter White. The collection spans the 1950s through the 1990s, with the bulk of it from when Jondelle Johnson was Executive Director in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Atlanta police department responded swiftly and decisively. Officers arrested seventy-seven protesters, charging them under state laws banning trespassing and unlawful assembly. Policemen placed the students—the pride of the black middle class—in handcuffs, led them to police wagons, and drove them to the city jail.
