Fully grown, Atlas cedar is a large coniferous evergreen tree, 30 to 35 m (98 to 115 ft) (rarely 40 m) tall, with a trunk diameter of 1.5 to 2 m (4.9 to 6.6 ft). It is very similar in all characters to the other varieties of Lebanon cedar; differences are hard to discern.
Atlas Cedar tree identification is by its needles, cone and overall shape. The needles are in clusters, the cones are barrel-shaped and the branch-ends usually point upward. The normal wild form is uncommon and has deep green needles.

The barrel-shaped cones have smooth scales and are shorter than other cedars—yellow before maturing to dark brown. You can identify the Atlas cedar by its dark-brown or gray bark that fissures as it grows.

Atlas Cedar probably arrived in North America during the 1840s, but certainly by the end of the 1850s (Jacobson 1996) and quickly became a popular ornamental tree. It is now a common sight in much of the northeast USA and adjacent parts of Canada, and along the western seaboard.
