The Race Rankings have the same rule for what is countable as the ATP Rankings, except with 2021 results only. They count the 19 best tournament points plus Tour Finals, if you qualify.
I think the primary advantage for the current rankings system has is its simplicity. It is relatively easy to explain to fans why a particular player is ranked the way that they are. Most proposed alternative systems might better predict outcomes than the current rankings but are generally much more difficult to explain.
The ATP live ranking and ATP Live race are the main two people talk about. live ranking = the 52 week rolling ranking, but taking into account daily points earned as each round of ongoing tournaments are played.

ATP Race Ranking: My personal favorite, it ranks players for just the current season but doesn't reach a high level of accuracy until after the clay/grass seasons. This and the official rankings became more skewed and inaccurate when Wimbledon points were removed.
