Mary Katherine Fualaau [1] (previously Letourneau, née Schmitz; January 30, 1962 – July 6, 2020) was an American teacher who pleaded guilty in 1997 to two counts of felony second-degree rape of a child and subsequently married her former student. The case received national attention.
On June 19, Des Moines police officers discovered Fualaau and Letourneau in the back of her minivan, parked late at night at the Des Moines Marina. The officers questioned the two; both insisted there was no improper conduct. The police then called Fualaau's mother, who was working the graveyard shift at a bakery.
