ISO 3166-1 (Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions – Part 1: Country codes) is a standard defining codes for the names of countries, dependent territories, and special areas of geographical interest.
The sortable table below contains the three sets of ISO 3166-1 country codes for each of its 249 countries, links to the ISO 3166-2 country subdivision codes, and the Internet country code top-level domains (ccTLD) which are based on the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 standard with the few exceptions noted.
This 2-letter country name abbreviation table is for me. And for you, too. I made this country name abbreviation list because, simply, I got tired of doing a search for one the infrequent times I needed it. (The two-letter codes are based on ISO 3166‑1, the codes generally used for internet URLs.)
So, although ISO is an international organization, it occasionally uses the national language to derive the abbreviations. This is not always the case: the country code for Austria (the national language is also German) is "AUT", based on the Latin "Austria." The International Organization for Standardization has other country codes.
28 Μαρ 2022 · All countries are represented by a 2-letter and 3-letter country code based on the International Naming Convention (ISO - International Organization for Standardization 3166). The 2-letter code is meant for more general purposes, while the 3-letter code more closely resembles the country’s name.
Below is a list of two-letter codes (ISO alpha-2), and the three letter codes (ISO alpha-3), as well as the United Nations, used numerical code M49 for countries, dependencies, and other areas. (Dependencies marked in Italic writing)
For example, all national postal organizations throughout the world exchange international mail in containers identified with the relevant country code. Internet domain name systems use the codes to define top-level domain names such as “.fr” for France, “.au” for Australia.
