James Berry is the author of several books of poetry and children’s literature, including A Story I Am In: Selected Poems (Bloodaxe Books, 2011), Windrush Songs (Bloodaxe Books, 2007), and Only One of Me: Selected Poems (Macmillan, 2004). He lived in England until his death on June 20, 2017.

James Berry was born in 1924 in Jamaica and after working in the US for a time, settled in Britain in 1948. His adult poetry collections are: Fractured Circles (1979); Lucy's Letters and Loving (1982); Chain of Days (1985); Hot Earth Cold Earth (1995); and Windrush Songs (2007).

19 Αυγ 2015 · In September 2004 he was one of fifty Black and Asian writers who have made major contributions to contemporary British literature who featured in the historic “A Great Day in London” photograph at the British Library.
One of the first black writers to achieve wider recognition, he was awarded an OBE in 1990 and was a strong advocate for young black writers. He divided his time between Great Britain and Jamaica until his death in 2017.
He developed his writing practice while working as a dental technician and telephone engineer, and became one of the earliest writers to use Jamaican patois in his writing. Berry wrote often about the Caribbean migrant experience, highlighting the racism and hardships black people faced in Britain.
