Examples of body processes controlled by the ANS include heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, salivation, perspiration, pupillary dilation, urination, and sexual arousal. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system.
The somatic nervous system is the part of the peripheral nervous system associated with voluntary body movements. It consists of nerve fibers that control voluntary actions and convey sensory information input from the skin, skeletal muscles , and joints.
The autonomic nervous system controls cardiac and smooth muscle, as well as glandular tissue. The somatic nervous system is associated with voluntary responses (though many can happen without conscious awareness, like breathing), and the autonomic nervous system is associated with involuntary responses, such as those related to homeostasis.
