1 Ιαν 2013 · Evidence for interaction between the autonomic nervous system and cognitive processes is perhaps most evident in the context of decision making. Damasio’s “somatic marker hypothesis” provided an influential model for this: motivationally important (salient) events trigger automatic changes in bodily state.
The main difference between the somatic and autonomic systems is in what target tissues are effectors. Somatic responses are solely based on skeletal muscle contraction. The autonomic system, however, targets cardiac and smooth muscle, as well as glandular tissue.
autonomic: Acting or occurring involuntarily, without conscious control. somatic nervous system: The part of the peripheral nervous system that transmits signals from the central nervous system to skeletal muscles, and from receptors of external stimuli, thereby mediating sight, hearing, and touch.
