Earth’s surface is dominated by the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and Southern oceans, which together cover some 71 percent of the planet and whose average collective depth is 12,100 feet (3,688 meters).
The average depth of the ocean is about 3,682 meters (12,080 feet). The lowest ocean depth on Earth is called the Challenger Deep and is located beneath the western Pacific Ocean in the southern end of the Mariana Trench.
The definition of global mean surface pH refers to the top layer of the water in the ocean, up to around 20 or 100 m depth. In comparison, the average depth of the ocean is about 4 km. The pH value at greater depths (more than 100 m) has not yet been affected by ocean acidification in the same way.
7 Ιουν 2022 · The estimate of the average depth of the ocean basins is 3,682 metres (12,080 feet). This was calculated, using satellite measurements, by scientists from NOAA and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
27 Φεβ 2024 · Using such tools as sonar, radar and satellite technology, scientists have calculated that the global ocean has an average (mean) depth of approximately 12,785 feet (3,897 meters). That works out to around 2.4 miles, or 3.8 kilometers.
The deep sea is broadly defined as the ocean depth where light begins to fade, at an approximate depth of 200 m (660 ft) or the point of transition from continental shelves to continental slopes. [1][2] Conditions within the deep sea are a combination of low temperatures, darkness, and high pressure. [3] .
The exact depth of the Challenge Deep was discovered in 2021 thanks to remote-operated submersible vehicles. On average, the ocean is around 3.7km deep (3,688m to be exact), according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
