27 Ιουλ 2016 · Sea waves are a periodic phenomenon in which wave phases such as crests and troughs relentlessly alternate and repeat during the propagation towards a shore. The wave period can be defined as the time it takes for two consecutive crests to pass through a fixed point.

The wind-generated waves with periods larger than 0.25 seconds are known as surface gravitywaves, which are the waves we observe when we go to the beach. When generated by local winds, they are irregular and short-crested and are known as wind sea (Figure 5, left).
6 Μαρ 2017 · 2 Types of Ocean Waves and Wave Classification. Ocean waves can be classified in several ways (Kinsman, 1965; Massel, 2013; Holthuijsen, 2007, among others). The most intuitive and commonly used classification is based on the wave period or the associated wavelength.
