Most open ocean waves are deep water waves. Since the water is deeper than the wave base, deep water waves experience no interference from the bottom, so their speed only depends on the wavelength: where g is gravity and L is wavelength in meters.

The major parameters to describe sea state are the different peak periods (Tp composed of Tp1, Tp2, Tpw), the different mean periods (Tm composed of Tm02, Tm-10), the significant wave heights (Hs composed of Hs1, Hs2, Hsw) and the different peak directions (dp composed of dp1, dp2, dp3).
5 Μαρ 2020 · The wavelength for an ocean wave might be around 120 meters (394 feet). But a typical microwave oven generates waves just 0.12 meter (5 inches) long. Visible light and some other types of electromagnetic radiation have far tinier wavelengths.
6 Μαρ 2017 · 2 Types of Ocean Waves and Wave Classification. Ocean waves can be classified in several ways (Kinsman, 1965; Massel, 2013; Holthuijsen, 2007, among others). The most intuitive and commonly used classification is based on the wave period or the associated wavelength.
A number of other wave parameters - like Ta, the average period - are measured to describe natural sea states. Yet even taken together, the basic wave parameters give very limited information about wave characteristics and behavior.
Ocean Waves are disturbances in the surface of the ocean. They can be created by wind, gravity, or other displacements of water. Satellites typically measure significant wave height, which is the average wave height of the highest third of waves in a given sample period.
