Most open ocean waves are deep water waves. Since the water is deeper than the wave base, deep water waves experience no interference from the bottom, so their speed only depends on the wavelength: where g is gravity and L is wavelength in meters.
Ocean Waves are disturbances in the surface of the ocean. They can be created by wind, gravity, or other displacements of water. Satellites typically measure significant wave height, which is the average wave height of the highest third of waves in a given sample period.
A number of other wave parameters - like Ta, the average period - are measured to describe natural sea states. Yet even taken together, the basic wave parameters give very limited information about wave characteristics and behavior.
