Period: the time it takes for two successive crests to pass a given point. Frequency: the number of waves passing a point in a given amount of time, usually expressed as waves per second. This is the inverse of the period. Speed: how fast the wave travels, or the distance traveled per unit of time.
Ocean Waves are disturbances in the surface of the ocean. They can be created by wind, gravity, or other displacements of water. Satellites typically measure significant wave height, which is the average wave height of the highest third of waves in a given sample period.
Ocean waves are also described in terms of wave period. This is the time required for two successive crests (one wavelength) to pass a fixed point. On the ocean, it may be easier and more accurate to record how long it takes ten waves to pass and then divide by ten to obtain the average period.

6 Μαρ 2017 · 2 Types of Ocean Waves and Wave Classification. Ocean waves can be classified in several ways (Kinsman, 1965; Massel, 2013; Holthuijsen, 2007, among others). The most intuitive and commonly used classification is based on the wave period or the associated wavelength.
The time it takes to repeat is called the period and the number of times it repeat in one second is called the frequency. However, if you ever sat at the ocean and watched water waves role in, you would realize that waves also repeat in space.
Waves in the Ocean. In this document we will discuss three types of waves: wind-driven waves, tides and tsunamis. When the wind blows on the surface of the ocean it produces ripples, waves, and swell. Gravitational forces (mostly from the moon and sun) plus centrifugal forces in the solar system produce tides.
