In AW, Shadowland is the team that fully counters Axmen. They can control the battle by placing Abi Block on Beast and quickly removing Jubilee with Elektra’s ultimate. Bionic Avengers is a natural counter for Axmen.

He gets attacked, counters, and, if the target is already vulnerable, he takes off two positive effects, may it defense up, speed up, immunity etc. That's so much more valuable than having 10% more damage.
Essentially, you must leave 6-7 strong teams for your Offense. Then you need to pick the best Defensive setups for each Stage from the rest of your roster. The most viable strategy for Cosmic Crucible is to make sure that you can beat any enemy setup as fast as possible and without casualties.
