Its sides are embedded with prismatic blades traditionally made from obsidian, which is capable of producing an edge sharper than high quality steel razor blades. The macuahuitl was a standard close combat weapon.
The obsidian sword would be crafted from a Wooden Sword with 8 Obsidian blocks placed around it on a Crafting Table, as the real weapon uses a long wooden base (the wooden sword) to hold individual obsidian blades.
Regarding your concerns about breaking it, search an image of Macuahuitl, it was an ancient Aztec weapon that had individual obsidian blades, this weapon was brutal and effective. Also, the arrangement of the obsidian teeth allowed for them to be substituted individually if needed.
