Sweepstakes, prize, and lottery frauds are among the top scams people report to the FTC. These scams usually start with a call or message that says you’re a winner. (A lie.) They say to get the so-called prize you have to send money or click somewhere to give your information.

Or that doing so would improve their chances of winning a prize.
The initial contact in a sweepstakes scam may be a call, email, social media notification or even snail mail offering congratulations for winning a big contest. But there’s a catch: You’ll be asked to pay a fee, taxes or customs duties to claim your prize.
