1 Ιαν 2024 · Herein, we report the first case of persistent bacteremia caused by B. subtilis var. natto in an immunocompetent patient without any gastrointestinal involvement. A 53-year-old Japanese woman who had been consuming natto every day was admitted to our hospital with complaints of fever and chills.
23 Μαΐ 2022 · B. subtilis var. natto, normally acting as an intestinal protector, can cause bacteremia through bacterial translocation due to gut dysbiosis as a result of old age, diabetes mellitus, end-stage renal disease, hematological malignancies, leaky gut caused by SARS-CoV-2, and long-term immunosuppressive treatment for COVID-19. 8 Ιουλ 2022 · We report a case of bacteremia caused by Bacillus subtilis variant natto after a gastrointestinal perforation in a patient in Japan. Genotypic and phenotypic studies of biotin identified B. subtilis var. natto. This case and 3 others in Japan may have been caused by consuming natto (fermented soybeans).
The most common portal of entry of B. subtilis was secondary bacteremia due to perforation or ileus (70%), followed by an unknown site (30%). B. subtilis should be considered not only as a contaminant but also as a true pathogen of bacteremia.
Bacillus subtilis is a Gram-positive bacterium, rod-shaped and catalase-positive. It was originally named Vibrio subtilis by Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg, [9] and renamed Bacillus subtilis by Ferdinand Cohn in 1872 [10] (subtilis being the Latin for "fine, thin, slender").
wever, a few cases of bacteremia caused by B. subtilis have been reported in Japan (3–6). We report a case of B. subtilis variant natto bacteremia and peritonitis caused by in-gestion of natto, a traditional fermented food in Japa.
Bacillus subtilis is the best studied model organism of the Gram-positive lineage. It is naturally transformable and has an extremely powerful genetic toolbox. It is fast growing and easy to cultivate.
