Surgery or other procedures. To reduce the size of the cyst, your care provider may drain the fluid from the cyst using a needle. This is called needle aspiration and is often performed with ultrasound guidance. If a joint problem is causing the cyst, arthroscopic surgery may be performed to repair the problem.

When the knee is flexed to 45 degrees, the mass often either softens or fully disappears (e.g., Foucher's sign) due to the relief of tension within the cyst.
Baker’s cyst infection may result in a surgical emergency in which the surgeon should be aware not only of the knee involvement but also about the possible dissemination to the calf. We suggest always suspecting the presence of a cyst, particularly in cases of recurrent septic knee arthritis.
How is it treated? The discomfort of a Baker’s cyst can be treated with a compressive knee brace, anti-inflammatory medications. In some circumstances, the cyst can be drained of fluid. Sometimes cortisone injections are used to reduce inflammation in the knee. Rarely, but sometimes, surgery is needed to remove the cyst.
