The term “sashay” came into use during the 19 th century and evolved from the word “chassé” – not surprising. In ballet, chassé is a critical linking step, most frequently used to connect jumping steps and provide the necessary impetus for a high elevation.
Ballet terms (A-Z): Adage, Adagio [French: a-DAHZH] Slow, sustained and gentle movement. Adagio is a center combination consisting of controlled, lyrical and continuous steps. It is characterized by the ease and grace of the positions and connections, and builds the dancer’s control and endurance.
The chassé (French: [ʃase], French for 'chased'; sometimes anglicized to chasse / ʃæˈseɪ, ʃæs /) is a dance step used in many dances in many variations. All variations are triple-step patterns of gliding character in a "step-together-step" pattern. The word came from ballet terminology.
