Balsa has excellent sound, heat, and vibration insulating properties, and is also incredibly buoyant: in fact, “Balsa” is the Spanish word for “raft.”
As a hardwood, Balsa wood is one of the lightest and densest types of wood you can find. The reason why Balsa wood is light can be seen only through a microscope. The cells of this wood type are big and have very thin walls. As a result, the ratio of the solid matter to the open space is very small.

Hard Plastic turns to dust–it shatters. Soft Plastics allow a nice clean chip to be sliced off, almost like you slice cheese with a knife. Of course, the same is true for woods. “Hard” Wood versus “Soft” Wood has more to do with the seeds of the Wood than the actual hardness. Balsa seems soft but is technically a Hardwood.
