The Bark Mitzvah is a self-styled tongue-in-cheek dog "coming of age" celebration occasionally held by Jews for their pets. It is not necessarily held in conjunction with a specific age, but can occur when the dog turns 13 months or 13 years of age.
A bark mitzvah is a pseudo-traditional observance and celebration of a dog's coming of age, [54] [55] as in the Jewish traditional bar and bat mitzvahs. The term has been in use since at least 1958, when Beverly Hills couple Janet and Sonny Salter held a bark mitzvah for their 13 year old dog, Windy.
Bark Mitzvahs can be – and are – celebrated in many different ways. Some people simply put a kippah/yarmulke, and maybe a “doggy tallit/prayer shawl,” on their dog, and perhaps give their dog a special Bark Mitzvah bone-shaped cookie or cake from a local dog bakery, and take some pictures.
