The Barn Owl holds a unique and mysterious allure for Irish people. Their dark, soul-piercing eyes and bloodcurdling screech are almost other-worldly. To glimpse its ghostly form, floating silently over their hunting grounds in the dead of night is one of the most magical natural spectacles in the Irish countryside.
Ghostly pale and normally strictly nocturnal, Barn Owls are silent predators of the night world. Lanky, with a whitish face, chest, and belly, and buffy upperparts, this owl roosts in hidden, quiet places during the day. By night, they hunt on buoyant wingbeats in open fields and meadows.
Barn owl bodies are primed for predation, with heart-shaped facial discs that funnel sound into their ears, alerting them to the rustlings of small mammals, snakes, fish, and insects.
