The purpose of this booklet is to make accessible some of the findings from this research, to increase our understanding of Barn Owls in Ireland and their importance in the countryside, and to provide information on how to help their conservation.
The legs are long and the head is smoothly rounded, without ear tufts. Larger than a screech-owl, but smaller than a Great Horned Owl. American Barn Owls are pale overall with dark eyes. They have a mix of buff and gray on the head, back, and upperwings, and are white on the face, body, and underwings. When seen at night they can appear all white.
The Barn owl (Tyto alba) is the most widely distributed species of owl in the world and one of the most widespread of all species of birds. It is found almost everywhere in the world except for the polar and desert regions, Asia north of the Himalayas, most of Indonesia, and some Pacific Islands.

An adult Barn Owl is about 33 cm. high with a wing-span of approximately 85 cm. Barn Owls have superb sight and hearing which enables them to catch their prey in the dark. When hunting they drop silently down on to their prey and grab it with their talons, killing it instantly.
Barn owl bodies are primed for predation, with heart-shaped facial discs that funnel sound into their ears, alerting them to the rustlings of small mammals, snakes, fish, and insects.
