Prefixes are short names and letter symbols for numbers (powers of ten). A prefix may be attached to the front of a unit to form a multiple of the unit. It does not form a sepa-rate unit. For example, the prefix kilo (k) means 1000, so kilometer (km) means 1000 meters. To preserve the sound of a prefix, stress the first syllable.
