Bat-eared foxes are small canids (~2–4kg, Estes 1991) with conspicuous large ears. The tail is bushy with a broad black stripe extending down to the black tip. They appear quite dark and “hunch-backed” when seen foraging at a distance, and are often in pairs or small family groups.

  2. The Bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis) is a species of fox that lives in the African savanna. Fossil records indicate this canid first appeared during the middle Pleistocene. It is named for its large ears, which have a role in thermoregulation.

  3. The Bat-eared Fox occurs in two discrete subpopulations in eastern and southern Africa. The species is widespread and is common in conservation areas, becoming uncommon in arid areas and on farms in South Africa where they are occasionally persecuted. There are no major threats believed to be resulting in any major range-wide declines.

  4. To escape from predators, the bat-eared fox relies on speed and its incredible dodging ability. It can effectively reverse direction at a flat run without losing speed (Estes, 1991). Bat-eared foxes are susceptible to predators down to the size of jackals and eagles.

  5. The bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis) is a species of fox found on the African savanna. It is the only extant species of the genus Otocyon [ 1 ] and considered a basal canid species. [ 4 ] Fossil records indicate this canid first appeared during the middle Pleistocene .

  6. The bat-eared fox, named for its big ears, is running out of living space as human populations grow and increasingly encroach on fox habitat. See what AWF is doing to protect bat-eared foxes in Africa.

  7. The bat-eared fox is a cute little fox species that lives on the plains of Eastern and Southern Africa eating termites and fooling around. It’s an inquisitive little mammal with ears that can be up to 5” (13cm) long, popping out over the short grass.
