26 Φεβ 2024 · We will be making history at this event. The 1st Illinois Light Artillery Battery D fired 72 rounds with their four 24 Pdr. Field Howitzers at Raymond in May of 1863. We will fire round No. 73 on April 13th on the battlefield with a 24 Pdr. Field Howitzer. You too can be a part of history by firing that 73rd round.

On May 12, 1863, the night before the Battle of Raymond, General McPherson’s advanced guards were located at “Magnolia Vale,” six miles from Raymond.

The Battle of Raymond was fought on May 12, 1863, near Raymond, Mississippi, during the Vicksburg campaign of the American Civil War. Initial Union attempts to capture the strategically important Mississippi River city of Vicksburg failed. Beginning in late April 1863, Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant led another try.
