I have been working on a full list of mechs (since the online spreadsheet has not been updated for 1.9) which indicates the "base game" mechs for campaign scoring and the SDLF mechs with engine double heat sinks for pure awesomeness.
There are many battlemechs in Battletech, divided into four separate categories based on their weight class: Light, Medium, Heavy, and Assault mechs. Since you are always limited by the available mech cubicles, excess mechs must be stored or scrapped.
Make do Heavy mechs- It’s not always easy to find mechs in this game so here’s a few alternatives. -Orions are the classic heavy mech, take a lot of damage, deal a lot of damage, move slow. -Grasshoppers are fast for a heavy mech.
Here is the video game “BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception”! Released in 1988 on DOS, it's still available and playable with some tinkering. It's a role-playing (rpg) game, set in a battlemech, turn-based and licensed title themes and it was released on Amiga, Apple II and Commodore 64 as well.
Generally the best in class (non SLDF) mechs are the free tonnage options in their class (due to best firepower), while anything with a quirk can be effective in their specialty. On the weapons end, there are also lots of options. The big highlights are probably the ++ ultra autocannons and ++dmg snub PPCs.
