Macbeth: Life is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. By A5 S5, Macbeth is in deep despair: life has lost all meaning. He calls it a “tale told by an idiot.” This would have been an almost comical metaphor for Shakespeare, since he was the one who told Macbeth’s tale!
