Why do people believe in the paranormal? Surveys show that such belief is widespread and even increasing (Truzzi, 1971). For example, Jones et al. (1977) found that 58 per cent of a sample of students believed in half or more of a list of paranormal phenomena and 27 per cent claimed to have experienced a paranormal phenomenon.
