The Bergen County Police Academy will participate in the Alternate Route Program for our July 2024, and January 2025 Basic Course for Police Officers classes. The selection process will begin in February 2024 with no more than 200 applicants being accepted for the examination.
The Alternate Route Program (N.J.S.A. 52:17B-69.1) was designed to give individuals interested in becoming police officers, the opportunity to attend a certified police training academy at their own expense, prior to being hired by a law enforcement agency.

Alternate Route offers the opportunity to obtain a Police Training Commission certification, at your own expense, prior to being hired by a police agency.

Upon graduation, the Alternate Route Program recruits are eligible to be hired full-time with a police department and will then be awarded their PTC Certification and a Police Officer. This is an exceptional process that is likely to be expanded over time in New Jersey.
