The Bering Sea is named after Vitus Bering, a Danish -born Russian navigator, who, in 1728, was the first European to systematically explore it, sailing from the Pacific Ocean northward to the Arctic Ocean. [6] The Bering Sea is separated from the Gulf of Alaska by the Alaska Peninsula. It covers over 2,000,000 square kilometers (770,000 sq mi ...
The Bering Sea is about 890,000 square miles (2,300,000 square kilometers) in area. The longest distance between the two sides is about 1,490 miles (2,400 kilometers). The narrowest point of the sea is only 53 miles (85 kilometers) wide.
Its greatest known depth is 13,260 feet (4,040 meters). Its area is about 890,000 square miles (2,305,000 square kilometers). It is largely cut off from the Pacific Ocean by the Aleutian Islands chain. Through the Bering Strait the sea opens into the Arctic Ocean. The Bering Sea is considered one of the most difficult bodies of water to navigate.
In this TED-Ed by Jennifer Verduin, directed by Cabong Studios, we learn how surface currents, deep ocean currents, wind, salt, gyres, the Coriolis Effect, and other powerful factors affect how water moves around the planet.
20 Οκτ 2024 · The sea’s deepest point, 13,442 feet (4,097 metres), is in the Bowers Basin. The continental crust is more than 12 miles thick along the shallow shelves and in the Aleutian Islands. The thickness decreases in the slope areas, and in the deep part of the sea the crust is 6 to 9 miles thick.
