20 Οκτ 2024 · The Bering Sea may be divided into two nearly equal parts: a relatively shallow area along the continental and insular shelves in the north and east and a much deeper area in the southwest. In the shelf area, which is an enormous underwater plain, the depths are, in most cases, less than 500 feet.
[4] [5] It comprises a deep water basin, which then rises through a narrow slope into the shallower water above the continental shelves. The Bering Sea is named after Vitus Bering , a Danish -born Russian navigator, who, in 1728, was the first European to systematically explore it, sailing from the Pacific Ocean northward to the Arctic Ocean .
The bathymetry (bottom depth) of the Bering Sea is divided into two major regions: the shallow shelf region lying to the eastern side, which is less than 150 meters deep, and the deep region, which reaches to more than 3500 meters. (See the map on the first page.)

At 7 stations (BL01∼BL07) in the basin area, the sea floor is relatively deep, ranging from 2293 to 3863 m. While BL08 and BL09 stations are located in the slope area between 200 m and 2000 m, with water depths of 1435 m and 273 m respectively.

It is found at depths between 24 and 200 m in muddy sands mixed with shingle and gravel and in gravel with pebbled substrates (Scarlato, 1981). Environmental ranges have been reported by Myasnikov (1985) for temperature (0.79–4.79 °C), salinity (33.05–33.43), and oxygen concentrations (5.67–6.40 mg L −1).
