The thickness decreases in the slope areas, and in the deep part of the sea the crust is 6 to 9 miles thick.
Its deepest point is only 90 m (300 ft) in depth. It borders the Chukchi Sea (part of the Arctic Ocean) to the north and the Bering Sea to the south. The Bering Sea is the northernmost part of the Pacific Ocean that comprises a deep water basin (the Aleutian Basin) that rises up through a narrow slope into the shallower water above the continental shelves.
Located between Alaska and Russia, the Bering Strait is the only marine gateway between the icy Arctic and the Pacific Ocean. At its narrowest point, the strait is only 55 miles wide. The Bering Strait may be narrow, but it’s teeming with wildlife—beluga whales, bowhead whales, gray whales, walruses, polar bears, ringed and ribbon seals.
